Police reported they were contacted by a man who discovered a vehicle in Hanau covered with reddish substance

Approximately 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a statement.

Police say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.

The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Officers then discovered many other marked cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement report early analysis indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; investigators are currently not informed of any physical harm in connection with the event," they stated.

Local authorities said they were working "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the public for details.

An important representative commented the incident left him stunned and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
